Voice Therapy

Why Voice Therapy?

Voice problems may occur suddenly or they can develop gradually over time. Doctors and Ear Nose and Throat Specialists may refer patients to a qualified Speech Pathologist who specialises in voice therapy. You can of course make direct contact with a Speech Pathologist (no referral necessary).

Voice therapy can be extremely effective in treating problems such as:

  • Vocal Constriction / tightness
  • Vocal fatigue and tiredness
  • Vocal fold growths such as nodules, granulomas or polyps
  • PItch and/ or volume limitations or changes
  • Stress-related voice problems

Having vocal difficulties is often very stressful and can be both a personally and professionally challenging experience. Your voice and vocal tone is something completely unique to you so when something goes wrong with your voice, it can really shake your confidence. Think of voice therapy like ‘physio for the throat’.

What Happens in Voice Therapy?

strategic1

Assessment

An initial appointment goes for about an hour and I take a thorough look into any medical or relevant history, behaviours or incidents that may be contributing to your vocal difficulties. I will then do an assessment/ analysis of your voice and will talk you through how the voice works and how therapy can help your specific needs. If you are a singer, the session will include some extra activities.

Therapy

You will learn all about your vocal instrument and how it works, giving you valuable insight into your own voice. You will be shown clinically proven methods of how to rectify your vocal setup and also shown how to achieve a clearer and stronger voice over time. Therapy sessions are usually half an hour in length and you will be given some ‘homework’. Worksheets often come with recordings that you can use at home when practicing. Voice problems happen for a reason and must be looked at in the context of the whole person – everyone is different. Singers will learn how to generalise and use these skills. I have a background in music and I am a singer as well, so I actually practice everything I preach!

Maintenance

Just like any muscular injury – most of the time your voice can recover. In fact, most people leave voice therapy with not only a healthier, restored voice but more importantly fresh insight and ultimate control over their voice.
