Accent Reduction Therapy can sometimes be referred to as elocution, accent modification, or accent neutralisation. It is a systematic approach that helps you to reduce or change your accent, or to adopt a new accent. It involves teaching the sounds and patterns of a new or desired language. Most people seeking to reduce the heaviness of their accent already have achieved a very good level of English in the areas of grammar and vocabulary but are having trouble with matching the exact sounds of English vowels and consonants and may be struggling with the intonation or music of English.
Being a Speech Pathologist gives me some added skills and insight (I like to call them secret weapons) helping clients achieve their goals a little faster. I try to make it fun and engaging with worksheets and recordings to help with home practice.
Speech Pathologists are professionals who are trained to listen to and analyse speech patterns and grammar as well as all other aspects of communication such as non-verbal communication (body language, speech rate & intonation/music of the voice).
EMPLOYERS: If you are an employer interested in helping staff members or with their verbal communication and accent is one of the main issues – please contact me for a chat. Many employers help support and pay for a course of accent reduction for their staff who may be struggling in this area.
I will talk to you about the specific areas you wish to change and I will do a thorough analysis of your speech to see which vowels and consonants we need to target.
I will also talk to you about other aspects such as rate of speech, intonation and stress patterns/rhythms of your speech.
